Utho Cloud Plans 10,000-GPU Expansion to Build India’s Sovereign AI Compute Backbone
As the race to build homegrown artificial intelligence capabilities accelerates, the expansion seeks to provide predictable costs and sovereign infrastructure for the nation’s digital ecosystem.
India’s race to build homegrown artificial intelligence infrastructure is gaining momentum, with Utho Cloud announcing plans to deploy 10,000 GPUs over the next seven to eight quarters. The expansion is aimed at creating a large-scale sovereign AI compute infrastructure within India.
Democratising Access and Availability
The planned deployment will include NVIDIA H200, H100, A100, RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell and L4 GPUs. Utho Cloud says the infrastructure will cater to a broad range of users, including enterprises, startups, researchers and public sector organisations, supporting workloads from AI inference to large-scale model training.
A major focus of the initiative is GPU availability. With high-performance computing resources often facing shortages and long procurement cycles, Utho aims to offer guaranteed access without waitlists or auction-based pricing. The company also says its GPU infrastructure could cost up to 60% less than traditional hyperscaler offerings, alongside pricing in Indian rupees.
The Data Sovereignty Imperative
Data sovereignty is another central part of the strategy. Utho plans to keep customer data and model training within India, while supporting compliance with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act. This could be particularly relevant for organisations handling sensitive enterprise, government and research data.
The announcement comes as India seeks to expand domestic access to high-performance AI computing. With more than 51,000 users, Utho is positioning the GPU expansion as a way to reduce cost and infrastructure barriers for organisations developing AI applications.
The larger significance goes beyond the number of GPUs. As AI becomes increasingly important to business, research and public services, access to reliable compute within national borders is emerging as a strategic requirement. Utho Cloud’s expansion reflects the growing push to build an Indian AI infrastructure ecosystem that combines computing capacity, predictable costs and greater control over data.
